Continental Launches ContiTPU, a Seven-Layer Lightweight TPU Inner Tube for Road, Gravel and MTB
Continental has announced ContiTPU, a state-of-the-art extension to Continental’s high-quality inner tube range created for both performance-focused and space-conscious cyclists. Available in a wide range of sizes from 25/35 – 622, Continental has developed a premium lightweight yet durable product suitable for both road and off-road riders.
Continental has deployed the highest grade of micrometer-thick TPU across seven sealed layers to maximize airtightness and durability. The tubes are uncolored to further ensure the highest material quality and prevent air retention issues caused by dye-related surface imperfections. Every ContiTPU tube is quality-checked post-production.
The base of the valve shaft is slightly conical in shape to improve fit to the wheel rim and reduce unwanted movement, while the valve is internally threaded to allow for the use of valve extensions or a replacement valve core.
Every ContiTPU tube, inclusive of raw materials, is made in Germany. A repair patch is also supplied with every pack.
Hannah Ferle, Road Product Manager, Continental Tires, said: “Continental’s new TPU tube combines highest-grade materials and innovative production technologies to deliver a product that is not only the lightest within our tube portfolio but also the one with the smallest packing size. These were the two main characteristics we focused on in the development process and why I think that the TPU tube is great for every cyclist, whether it is someone focusing on performance and seeking to reduce weight and lower rolling resistance, or someone who simply wants to have the space to load their jersey pockets full of snacks for a long day on the bike, much like myself.”

Important information
– TPU tubes must never be used in conjunction with rim brakes. Excessive heat exposure can lead to a sudden loss of air pressure.
– Use suitable rim tape to protect the TPU tube. Otherwise, it can become damaged.
– During mounting, the TPU tubes must not be inflated over 0.3 bar. Over-inflation during this part of the process can excessively stretch the tube and render it unusable.
– Ensure the valve hole in the rim is the correct diameter. If the valve hole is too large, the valve can twist or shear off.
– Pay close attention when mounting the tube. Always ensure the tube or valve isn’t trapped, twisted or damaged.
– TPU tubes must never be re-used with a smaller tire! If you are mounting a smaller tire, then it is necessary to use a new tube.
