London, 12th January 2018 – Strava, the social network for athletes, has analysed data from 31.5 million uploaded exercise activities to show, for the first time, exactly when people are most likely to waver in their fitness regimes.

During January, millions of Brits aim to get fitter, be healthier and shift some of the Christmas paunch. The analysis of historical Strava data shows that this enthusiasm can be short lived, and that the day people are most likely to give up will be Friday 12th January 2018.

Tens of millions of athletes across 195 countries call Strava the home of their active life – providing an unparalleled insight into the behaviours and trends of active people in the UK and around the world.

In 2017, 16 activities were uploaded to Strava every second. Members upload their exercise activities using Strava’s free mobile App, GPS devices or fitness wearables. Strava’s global community of athletes generated hundreds of billions of data points, covering a staggering 8.4 billion km of cumulative distance. In the UK, we cycled 904 million km, and ran 192 million km.

Data from the Strava Year in Sport 2017 report (which analysed a total of 339 million runs and rides around the world) shows there are some key ways to stay motivated and push through the day you’re most likely to give up:

  • Exercising with friends leads to people being 22% more active
  • Joining a club leads to people being 46% more active
  • Set a goal – of those who set a race as a goal in January, 92% were still active 10 months later
  • Train in the morning – people who are most regularly active, are likely to exercise in the morning
  • Start run or bike commuting – people who commute to work under their own steam are 43% more active at the weekend

Gareth Mills from Strava, said: “Sticking to resolutions is hard and we all know there’s a lot of talk and pressure in January about getting fitter and being healthier. A key factor in success is motivation, and analysing millions of activity uploads, we’ve been able to pinpoint the day your motivation is most likely to waver.”

He added: “However, it doesn’t have to be like this. We also used our data to analyse ways that active people can get through this time.”
