Surfing The Trails of Heida On A Mountainbike

Crazy man Manuel Scheidegger is back with more insane back wheel action in this surf-inspired blast down some of the most inspiring and beautiful trails around. It’s not enough that this landscape would make any normal rider weep with joy, Manuel has to ride them purely using only his back wheel. Perhaps we should call him ‘Manual’ Scheidegger!
“After my wheelie world record a year ago, now I wanted to go trail-riding. But very soon I had an idea: is it possible to ride the hole trail on the rear wheel, meaning to “surf ” it ? The singletracks in Valais ( Switzerland ) are perfectly suited for this , because often the trails leads along artificial water pipes, so-called “Bisse” or “Suone” . On these flow – trails you can do wheelies or manuals very well.
“The Heida is a historic aqueduct. It rises in the small mountain lake “Blausee ” and supplied the village Visperterminen with water . Along these trails also leads the world famous stages – mountainbike – Race “Swiss Epic”. But the white wine of Visperterminen is also called „Heida“. This arises in the highest vineyard in the world. A main purpose of the Suone “Heida” is therefore the irrigation of the vines. And so the trail ends in a glass of wine. Cheers.”

“Nach meinem Wheelie-Weltrekord vor einem Jahr war nun wieder Trailriding angesagt. Schon bald kam mir dabei aber der Gedanke, ob man den Trail komplett auf dem Hinterrad fahren, also „surfen“, kann. Die Singletrails im Wallis (Schweiz) sind dafür perfekt geeignet, denn oftmals führen die Wanderwege entlang von künstlich angelegten Wasserleitungen, sogenannten „Suonen“ oder „Bissen“. Auf diesen Flowtrails lässt es sich gut im Wheelie oder im Manual fahren.
“Die Heida ist so eine historische Wasserleitung. Sie entspringt im kleinen Bergsee „Blausee“ und versorgt das Dorf Visperterminen mit Wasser. Entlang dieser Trails führt auch das weltweit bekannte Etappen – Mountainbike – Rennen „Swiss Epic“. Heida wird aber auch der Weisswein von Visperterminen genannt. Dieser entsteht im höchstgelegenen Rebberg der Welt. Ein Hauptzweck der Suone „Heida“ ist also auch die Bewässerung der Rebstöcke. Und so endet der Trail in einem guten Glas Wein.”
