Mavic 2016 Products at Eurobike
Mavic have a huge presence at Eurobike, and their range keeps on growing, the technically led brand had lots of new products on show and there was clear evidence they had been very busy in Annecy over the last year. There is so much to talk about in fact it is hard to know where to start, but I guess we’ll dive in with a product that might surprise you, the new “bum bag” or fanny pack as the Americans like to say…
You’d be forgiven for thinking a humble bag is just that, but the Crossride bag combines with the Crossride Shorts, or indeed any of their MTB shorts to double up as a belt. Say that again, the bag integrates with the shorts, instead of having the strap rub under your t-shirt, by integrating it into your shorts it stays off your skin and helps keep them up to. Simple but rather ingenious we think!
There is enough room in the pack for a pump and a snack bar, as well as a tube and a multitool, although if you are running the Mavic Tubeless Wheelsets you won’t be needing that tube in there! This brings me neatly onto the wheels, in terms of whats new the guys at Mavic have shaved some weight from each wheel. When you are mountain biking you are constantly hitting obstacles, it is this stop start motion that tires the legs so quickly compared with riding on a flat surface with a road bike. Each time the wheels stall you have to re-engage the power to keep them moving.
Mavic have created a range of wheels that are amongst the lightest in class, with offerings for Enduro, Trail and XC they have a wheelset to suit you… Of course last year saw them combine the wheels and tyres together removing the need for tubes and further increasing the weight advantage.
As we’ve got to the CrossMax XC wheels and tyres we may as well mention the rather good looking shoe in the shot above. The CrossMax SL Ultimate is a new shoe for 2016 it features less mesh than their previous XC shoes on the front, which makes them easier to clean and also helps to keep them dry too. A double BOA system is used to ensure a snug fit and there is an easy quick release mechanism to make taking them off and on a breeze.
Skipping back to the CrossRide range in addition to the new hip pack there are technical fabrics and garments that you could just as easily wear on a night out as you could on the trails. There is also a new CrossRide helmet which features some of the tech of the CrossMax lid from last year but is at a better price point.
Lets get back to the tech side of things for a moment, there are some interesting developments here, first up with the CrossMax helmet. This year they have incorporated a new foam into the front of the helmet, it’s called Live Fit Technology. Essentially this memory foam (officially called XRD Foam) has been added to increase the comfort of the helmet, especially on long rides where pressure points can arise. Of course you want your helmet on tight, but equally you want it to be comfortable. It has vibration absorption properties too, so on rough descents it will offer improved fit and feel .
Next Mavic turned their attention to the humble chamois, something many of us take for granted. Usually you get a foam pad, or if you are paying top dollar a gel cushion to protect your derrière as you ride. Mavic have utilised an Ortholite memory foam in a multi layer set up which increases the shock absorption over a high end gel pad by 20% They had a neat display with ball bearings, drop them on the gel and they’d bounce, drop them on the Ortholite set up and nothing. In addition the inserts come in two sizes, on the large – extra large sizes the pads are bigger, and on the smaller sizes the pads are smaller to take into account the distribution of your bone structure according to your size… And you thought it was just a humble chamois!
Elsewhere on the stand we spotted a pretty serious looking winter boot which is waterproof and perfect for foul weather riding where you want to keep your feet warm and dry. The clothing range has new colours too, matching what is on trend and also ensuring you can have a tie in with the helmets and head out onto the trails looking as pro as you want to.
Mavic certainly look to be coming out on top with the products for 2016, we loved the technology behind many of the items and the attention to detail was there in abundance. We’ll be looking to get those chamois on test, as well as the new pack, short combo! For more details on the Mavic range head to your local dealer or check out the site here:
