'Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, make sure you send it!' these are the words which greet you on the inside of the new rage pads from 661, so make of that what you will. We have two sets of the Rage from 661, one with a hard plastic shell, the other soft and flexible.

Both sets share many design features and cover the knee and upper shins, held in place with silicone gripper strips at the top and bottom and a single velcro closure above the knee. The backs of the pads are left as open as possible to provide plenty of venting, but this also means there is nothing to rub on the backs of knees. They feel very comfy and sock-like as you put them on, though they come up slightly narrow, so watch out on sizing if you have cross country calves! I'm not a big fan of the plastic outer 'storm trooper' look, but there are some advantages in terms of light weight, and less friction between knee and ground in the event of a crash. The added shin protection is a welcome addition to provide more cover, and although this extra length makes them a bit more tricky to get on, once in place they stay put.
Overall
Take your pick, hard or soft? Both offer a comfortable fit, plenty of cover over the knee and down onto the shins with very good venting up the back
