Seven Protection, over the past 5 years, have amassed an incredible list of sponsored riders covering all aspects of gravity mountain biking. The large selection of knee pads in their range cover all levels of protection and these, the Flex Knee, are their budget pads which claim to be value for money whilst retaining some of their best features. They feature a thin plastic shell backed with thick soft foam padding which extends slightly around the side of the knee. The back of the knee is fully open and two Velcro straps keep everything in place.

On The Trail

Once on, the pads felt slightly bulky and extend quite a way forward on the knee, however they are slim in profile and didn't interfere with pedalling or rub on the frame at all. The flexible neoprene fabric enabled a good range of movement and also adds to the lightweight nature of the pads.
The perforated custom foam, neoprene outer and open back of the pads meant there was good airflow even on long, sweaty rides.

Seven Protection's X-Profile knee cap certainly gives the confidence of having decent protection where you need it, and the pads are designed to exceed EU safety standards so you can rest assured they will do the job when required.

Once I had the Velcro straps adjusted well, I found I could just slide the pads on and off easily which was handy. Personally, I found the lower strap to be prone to catching the back of my knee as it's a very rough velcro strap, but this could be partly solved by making sure the rear mesh material covered it properly and was only a minor niggle. The Flex knee pads were used on numerous long, wet days out in the saddle and they continuously performed well and stayed in place.

Overall

Great value and well made, solid protection with a slightly rough and ready, but very effective fastening system.
